About We the People Kokomo

What is the mission of this group?

For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.  – Philippians 2:13

We the People of Kokomo desire to honor God and fulfill His purpose by taking care of the blessings He has provided for us.  This includes our environment, our community and our nation.  We are here to listen, learn, inform and mobilize our community to make it the most prosperous and healthy it can be.

What is your objective?

There are actually three:
1. To become aware of current legislative bills which affect our community health and safety.
2. To get the word out to others and speak up as “the public” at board and council meetings.
3. To encourage new people to run for office locally so we can get fresh ideas in the system.

Are there other groups like this?

Yes! Not only within Indiana (like the Lafayette WTP group) but across the nation. Check out the Links icon on the left side menu for Like-Minded Organizations.

Batteries

Are lithium-ion batteries dangerous?

Lithium-ion batteries are used in many common devices including laptops and electric vehicles. They are generally not considered dangerous if their protection circuitry is connected and all is working properly. Still, problems can occur. Improper handling or a defect in manufacture can result in an extremely hot fire which is difficult to extinguish. In these cases most fire fighters are trained to let it burn itself out, while toxic gases may escape to neighboring areas. The chemicals and materials used inside these batteries are very corrosive and harmful to humans.

What is StarPlus Energy?

StarPlus Energy is a collaboration interest formed by two companies: Samsung (South Korea battery manufacturer) and Stellantis (US auto maker, formerly known as Chrysler). StarPlus makes lithium-ion batteries for use in Electric Vehicles. The first plant in Kokomo opened in December 2024 and is supported by many new local suppliers such as Soulbrain (battery enclosures), Jaewon (electrolyte manufacturer and recycler), Sang America (electrical contacts), and others. Up to 1400 will be employed at StarPlus.

Water

What's all this concern about water?

The new StarPlus factory requires a lot of water to run, about 1 million gallons/day. This water must be piped in from other communities or drawn from new wells. There is a concern that drawing this much water from the aquifer may have two affects: 1) Water table for Kokomo will drop rendering many wells dry, and 2) The draw-down may cause old underground contamination plumes to start migrating unintentionally.

How much water does Kokomo normally use?

Kokomo currently consumes about 7 million gallons/day. This is growing as residential housing and businesses continue to expand.

How much water is available?

Some experts believe the primary aquifer in our region can support up to 9 million gallons/day. Keep in mind that rain water does not replenish ground water; this runs off via surface creeks.
